Tubing the St. Vrain
The town’s summer sport: a float from the Apple Valley Road bridge through the whitewater park, when the gauge reads between about 40 and 300 cfs, usually July and August.
Three free put-ins. The Apple Valley Road bridge on US 36 just west of town gives the long float through the canyon meadows to LaVern M. Johnson Park; the park itself is the short run through the whitewater features; a longer float continues under Main Street. The state gauge below the confluence (station SVCLYOCO) decides the day: under 40 cfs is too shallow, 40 to 100 is mellow, 100 to 300 is prime, above 300 is for experienced floaters and above 700 is not for tubes at all. May and June runoff is high and cold. Children twelve and under must wear a life jacket; tubes and jackets rent in town in summer.
